Sao Paulo – Sept-21st.
By Rosi Velozo
The 16th edition of the Pão de Açúcar Marathon Sao Paulo, which kicks off 21/sep at 7 am, is considered the greatest running event with alternating runners in Latin America. This year’s event counts a record of 30000 participants. It has 42.2km in an alternating system: Double: each runner will cover 21100m; Quartet: each one will perform 10550m; and Octect: each member completes 5275m. The first three of each category to cross the finish line will share a R$50000 prize to buy goods in the Group stores. Maximum duration is limited to 5 hours.
The Marathon was the brainchild of João Paulo Diniz, president of the Marketing Comitee of Pão de Açúcar Group, and was one of his dreams. The first edition took place in 1993 and had approximately 1000 runners. The event has since become one of the most traditional marathons in the country, and in its 15 years over 200.000 have already participated in the competitions, being already a reference for athletism in Brazil.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of what was already considered the greatest running event of its type, the marathon was transferred in 2002 to Cidade Universitaria, with over 20000 participants. In 2005 it moved back to the original venue, the Ibirapuera Park. Last year there was an innovation of sustainability with the recycling of all water plastic cups used.
The initiative is a way to stimulate conscience of the importance of practicing sports and improve quality of life, being a relatively cheap and easy to practice sport.
